In this article, we discuss the role of models in the construction of scientific knowledge and their possible contributions to science teaching. For this, we used the notion of model present in Mario Bunge's philosophy of science, bringing it closer to discussions about models and modeling in science education, specifically, the “Model-Based Inquiry” (MBI) teaching approach. We propose a detail of stages of MBI based on aspects of Bunge's philosophy and we present two examples of activities for teaching science, which include the theoretical approaches we propose.
