Origem, Composição e Matéria-Prima do Carvão Mineral

O carvão mineral, ou carvão de pedra, é um sólido escuro, encontradoem várias regiões do mundo. Foi formado como resultado de complexas
transformações químicas sofridas por organismos vegetais, “soterrados” há
milhares de anos.
O carvão mineral teve seu primeiro uso como combustível muito
difundido no século XVIII em substituição à lenha, o principal combustível
utilizado nas máquinas a vapor durante a Revolução Industrial no século XIX.
Entre os vários elementos químicos presentes na madeira, os principais
são carbono (50%), oxigênio (44%), hidrogênio (5%) e outros (1%).
Ele serve como fonte de combustível, usinas termelétricas e outras.
