This article identifies similarities and differences in the social representations of Early Childhood Education, constructed by mothers of children enrolled in public and private institutions that offer this stage of education. A societal approach was adopted for the development, through interviews, of a field study with 31 mothers of children enrolled in early childhood education.. Content analysis guided the organization of the material. The results revealed that among mothers, with children enrolled in public institutions, Early Childhood Education has the function of schooling, it is a place of protection, a promise of a better future. For mothers with children in private institutions, Early Childhood Education is a space for development, interactions, a complement to family education. The results suggest that the mothers' level of education and income influence their representations of Early Childhood Education. We reaffirm the group character of social representations.
