Abstract

The search for alternative sources of nutrients for plants is essential for our agriculture, which is dependent on the import of mineral fertilizers. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of continuous use of mineral fertilizer and doses of organic compost on onion yield and soil fertility in the 0 to 10 and 10 to 20 cm layers. The experiment was in a factorial scheme between the year factor (3 years) and the treatment factor (mineral fertilization and 5 doses of organic compost). The doses of organic compost were as follows: 0, 10, 20, 30 and 60 t ha-1. After harvesting, soil samples were collected in each plot in the 0 to 10 and 10 to 20 cm layers for analysis of the following attributes: pH, organic matter (MO), cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation and P, K, Ca levels, Mg, S, B, Cu and Zn. From the dose of 10 t ha-1 of organic compost, the yield of the onion was statistically equal to that obtained by the treatment that used only mineral fertilizers. The doses of organic compost increased CEC and in the levels of MO, P, K, Cu and Zn mainly in the 0 to 10 cm layer concerning the treatment that used only mineral fertilizer.
