Abstract

Considering the scarcity of professionals with specific training in the field of science/physics in the Cariri region of Ceará, in 2007 the Department of Physics of the Regional University of Cariri (URCA) implemented the Bachelor’s in Physics Education Program. This program aimed at educating individuals with specific knowledge and pedagogical skills. In 2011, URCA graduated its first class of qualified professionals poised to make a significant contribution to the region, both in primary and higher education. This qualitative-quantitative research was conducted through an interview with three open-ended questions administered to 76 graduates and a documentary analysis aimed at mapping the program's graduates, highlighting their educational journeys and career choices. The objective was to inquire about the trajectories of the graduates and the local demand for professionals in the field. Have they followed the qualification path, entering postgraduate programs? How was the presence of women in the course? Is there gender parity in the number of graduates? As a result, it was found that 70% of the graduates from the URCA Bachelor's in Physics Education Program went on to work in primary education, while 6.9% chose to pursue careers in higher education. Regarding the continued education of these graduates, 78.2% of them successfully enrolled in postgraduate programs. Among them, 11.9% have already completed their doctoral degrees, and 4% have undertaken post-doctoral internships in the field. It was also observed that 38.6% of the graduates are female, indicating that, although gender diversity among program alumni is increasing, the majority of graduates are still male, reflecting a national trend in the fields of Science and Technology.
