Abstract

The objective of the work was to evaluate the diagnosis of nitrogen status in real time with portable chlorophyll and nitrate sap meters for two onion cultivars. The experimental design was in plots subdivided with completely randomized blocks, with two cultivars in the plot (Bola Precoce and Crioula) and five doses of N in the subplots (0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg ha-1) and four replications. The intensity of the green color of the leaves (chlorophyll index) and the nitrate content in the sap in the youngest fully expanded leaf (YFEL) were evaluated in an approximate interval of 20 days in three seasons in the 2012/13 harvest (105, 132 and 153 days after sowing - DAS) and five seasons in the 2013/14 harvest (85, 105, 125, 145 and 160 DAS). There was a relationship between leaf N content in the YFEL and bulb yield with the levels of NO3- in the sap and chlorophyll index - CI for both onion and crop cultivars. Both the determination of NO3- and CI in the leaves can be used in determining the state of N and in defining the need for this nutrient to be applied as a covering in the onion crop.
