Abstract

Given the challenges faced in seed storage and drying in Brazil, it is essential to develop alternatives to improve these processes. This study evaluates the effectiveness of silica gel in drying oat seeds. The study, conducted at the Federal University of Pelotas, analyzed the drying of white oat seeds with an initial moisture content of 15% and 17%. Seeds (15 g) were distributed in experimental stations with different amounts of silica gel (6 g, 12 g, 18 g) and a control, in a 2 x 3 factorial design. The seeds were placed on an aluminum screen adapted to a gerbox with silica, and samples were collected over 24 h, with readings every 6 h. At 15% moisture content, containers with 6 and 18 g of silica showed a water loss of 0.4581 and 0.8012 g. At 17% moisture content, the seeds lost 0.8339 and 1.2016 g of water. The study indicates that silica gel is effective in drying oat seeds, providing a viable alternative to minimize losses and maintain seed quality.
