Abstract

We aimed to analyze the trend in pulmonary tuberculosis mortality in the state of Pernambuco in the period 2000-2019. This is an ecological study based on mortality data obtained from the public domain Mortality Information System. Segmented linear regression was performed using the Joinpoint Regression Program software to identify the annual and mean annual percentage changes. It was observed that most deaths occurred in the 30 to 59 years old age group (54.7%), in male individuals (75.2%), of brown race/colour (62.4%). Regarding education, 37.3% had up to 3 years of schooling. We found that the age-adjusted mortality rate showed a decreasing variation of 2.7% (CI -3.5; -1.9) on average throughout the studied period. In relation to sex, the rate decreased on average by 2.7% (CI -3.2; -2.3) for men and 2.9% (CI -4.2; -1.5) for women. In conclusion, Pernambuco's tuberculosis mortality rate showed a downward trend and mainly affected young male adults, of brown race/colour, with low levels of schooling.
