Abstract

Death by suicide is a public health problem and its consequences have reached worldwide proportions. The present study aimed to identify the frequency and factors associated with suicidal ideation in university students in the health area. 246 students participated who answered an online form. The instruments used were a questionnaire with sociodemographic, clinical, academic and work data, academic stressors, Beck's Suicidal Ideation scale and the Perceived General Self-efficacy scale. The results, obtained through Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, indicated an explanatory model consisting of four variables: self-efficacy, thinking about dropping out of the course and the stressors economic costs related to the course and reconciling studies and family. Public and institutional health actions aimed at promoting and preventing the mental health of university students are suggested.
