Abstract

The monitoring of water resources is a powerful instrument for water quality assessment and management, as it helps to reduce impacts related to human activities. However, in order to carry out water quality monitoring, it is essential to know physical, chemical and biological water characteristics over time and space. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate spatially and temporally the water quality of the Comandaí River, located in the Uruguay basin, through the Water Quality Index (WQI-Cetesb). Data were collected from three different points over the years 2018, 2019 and 2020. These data, the agglomerative multiplicative mathematical formulation of the WQI Cetesb was applied, which enabled the identification of three ranges of water quality throughout the historical series studied: poor, acceptable and good, with point 2 showing the greatest temporal variability. Finally, it was concluded that the WQI Cetesb can serve as a preliminary basis for the monitoring and management of the Comandaí River as well as a communication tool with society in general.
