Abstract

Groundwater is widely used for human supply and is susceptible to contamination from various anthropogenic activities. Therefore, this study assessed the vulnerability to groundwater contamination by a cemetery necropolis in the vicinity of the Municipal Cemetery and region in the city of Frederico Westphalen - RS, through the application of the GOD method (G: hydraulic confinement degree; O: strata occurrence; and D: water table level). The survey and processing of information on the wells registered in SIAGAS have classified the vulnerability of the municipal area at 52.67% in the insignificant class, 40.42% with low significance and 6.91% with medium significance. It was found that the Municipal Cemetery belongs to an area with a potential risk of contamination. This study has provided subsidies that can be used for managing land use and occupation in the municipality and for implementing groundwater protection measures.
