Alternative methods for dormancy breaking in Leucaena leucocephala seeds

Abstract

Leucaena leucocephala seedlings production is limited by seed dormancy. In the present study we tested different dormancy breaking methods in leucaena seeds, through a completely randomized design experiment with six treatments and four repetitions. The treatments were composed by T0-Control, T1- immersion in cold water for 24 hours, T2- immersion in cold water for 48 hours, T3- immersion in sulfuric acid at 95% for 5 minutes, T4- mechanical scarification, and T5- immersion in hot water at 60 oC for 15 minutes. The data were analyzed in the SISVAR statistical program and the means were compared through the Tukey test at 5% probability. Seeds immersed in cold water for 48 h had the best performance in dormancy breaking.
