The Federal Institutes (FI) in Brazil are institutions of higher, basic and professional education, operating in the five regions of the country. There are 36 groups connected to some of these units working on the Tutorial Education Program (TEP), which aims to provide students with the development of the ability to perform extracurricular activities, focusing on the principle of inseparability between teaching, research and extension. Despite its longevity in other higher education institutions, little is known about the profile of TEP groups in FI. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the specificities of active groups in these institutions, outlining their profile and their performance. This is a quantitative, qualitative and exploratory study, which methodology consisted of collecting data through an online questionnaire sent to the selected groups. The results show gaps in the groups, mainly in relation to the lack proximity with courses at other levels in the institutions and the limited institutional support given to their operation. Despite this, the program has been stimulating the students protagonism and autonomy, contributing in a very satisfactory way for their introduction in the world of work.
